The young police officer dies by suicide after complications of “weakening” laser lying surgery

A young man from Pennsylvania took his own life, months after he was subjected to laser corrective surgery.

His parents blame their child’s suicide about the “weakened” side effects, but vision experts claim that the procedure is generally “safe and effective.”

Ryan Kingerski, 26, a young Penn Hills police officer, was “fun and witty, only a genuine person,” according to Tim and Stefanie Kingererski, who spoke with Fox News Digital in an interview on the camera. (See video at the top of this article.)

“Ryan would always try to help somehow, even if he was a stranger,” Stefanie Kingererski said. “He was just a very sincere person: he meant what he said and said what he meant. He was passionate.”

Ryan was very close to his twin brother, Jacob, as they both followed his father’s footsteps to enter the law. He liked to play golf and spend time with his friends and girlfriend, they said his parents.

In August 2024, Lasik’s eye surgery suffered, a decision that “changed his life forever,” according to the Kingerskis.

He had glasses and contacts from the middle school, but chose surgery because he would no longer need them.

“My son told him he would enter, have the procedure and return to work in a couple of days,” said Tim Kingererski. “This never happened.”

On his return from surgery, Ryan said “something was not right”, complaining that his right eye was blurred.

“We told her to give her some time, but she only worsened,” her father said.

As the weeks progressed, the young man suffered a lean of symptoms, including severe headaches, double vision, theft, ghost, halos and other visual disturbances, according to his parents.

“He ruined his life. He weakened him.”

“It was complication after complication and did not improve,” said Stefanie Kingerski. “We made continuous efforts to see different specialists, trying to obtain different opinions … they just said he had to cure.”

Ryan’s mother stated that laser surgery left her son with “higher aberrations”, which are distortions to the eye that cause visual disturbances.

A cornea specialist said that Ryan had very thin corneas, which should have ruled out surgery.

“In a nutshell, he was not a candidate and they should be caught and they should have been warned,” said his mother.

As the effects got worse, Ryan retired from the activities he previously loved and reserved a lot, his parents said.

In January 2025, five months after surgery, he took his own life.

Ryan’s parents aim to raise awareness and call for “transparency and accountability”. They also filed a complaint to the FDA.

In an email to Fox News Digital, the FDA recognized the Kingerskis who had learned about the “horrible incident of Laser Lasik with Ryan Kingerski”. They also stated that while hospitals and clinics have to denounce associated deaths and injuries, they do not always.

In 2016, a student at Texas College, Max Cronin, committed suicide at the age of 27. His necrological states that his death was the result of “devastating complications of elective laser surgery”.

Industry representatives speak

Dr. James Kelly, MD, a renowned refractive surgeon specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist in New York City, said he is not aware of equally reviewed literature that reports higher suicide rates in patients who have had Lasik towards the same population demographics who have not had the procedure.

The Refractive Surgery Council, an organization that seeks to “help people make informed decisions about their vision correction options,” he spoke with Fox News Digital in defense of these procedures.

“A huge body of scientific data supports Lasik as safe and effective for those who are good candidates, which the FDA has repeatedly stated and validated with independent research,” a spokesman said.
