The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday demanded in the state of North Carolina and the Council of the North Carolina State Elections for allegedly not having had a precise list of voters.
The Trump Administration claims that the State of Tar Heel Viola The 2002 Help America voting law (HAVA) after the Board officials provided a voter registration form throughout the state that would not make it clear if an applicant must provide a driver’s license number or if the applicant does not have a driver’s license, the last four digits of the applicant’s social security number. If an applicant does not have it, the law says that the State must assign a special identification number.
Demand says: “A significant number of North Carolina voters did not provide the driver’s license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number through this voter registration form were registered, however, its electoral officials, in violation of the HAVA” and the defendants “only took limited actions to prevent more violations.”

“ There are a significant number of voters who do not have a driver’s license number, the last four digits of a Social Security number or any other identifying number, as required by section 303 of HAVA, which are included in the Voter Registration File of the North Carolina State, ” according to a presentation to the United States District Court for the eastern North District of Carolina. “These offenses will remain absent in relief from this court.”
“The precise voter registration rolls are essential to ensure that the North Carolina election will be made fair, accurately and without fraud,” said Deputy Attorney General Harlet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice in a statement. “The Department of Justice will not hesitate to file a lawsuit against jurisdictions that maintain registrations for the registration of inaccurate voters in violation of the federal voting laws.”
An earlier edition of the State Elections Council, in which the Democrats had the majority, acknowledged the problem by the end of 2023 after a voter complained. The Council updated the voter’s registration form, but refused to contact people who had been registered to vote since 2004 in time for the 2024 election so that they could fill the missing numbers.
According to the lawsuit, the Council stated that this information would be accumulated in an ad hoc manner, as voters appeared in the polling stations. It is not clear exactly how many records of voters still do not have identifying numbers.
The DOJ Civil Rights Division lawyers want a judge to give the State 30 days to develop a plan to contact voters with records that do not comply with federal law, obtain an identification number for each and add it to the electronic list.
The state and the national GOP last year sued the lack of identification of numbers, who estimated that they could have affected 225,000 registrants. However, federal judges refused to make changes so close to the general election.
The demand also referred to the executive order of President Donald Trump in the March election to “protect themselves from illegal vote, illegal discrimination and other forms of fraud, error or suspicion.”

Federal Judge battle over the NC Supreme Court election again to the State Court
After the election day, Jefferson Griffin presented the formal protests, a Republican candidate for a site in the State Supreme Court, which challenged about 65,500 ballots. He stated that about 60,000 were released by records whose records did not contain one of two identifying numbers. The State Electoral Council said that at least half of these voters provided an identification number at the beginning of this year.
Griffin also defied other 5,500 ballot papers belonging to military staff abroad and his family members who had not been forced to attach a copy of their photographic photographs, as well as a category of “never residents”, or North -American citizens with family bonds with Northern Carolina who have never lived in the United States.
A state appeal, criticized the management of the council of registration records, but finally ruled that the challenged votes had to remain in the final election account.

Democratic associated justice Allison Riggs was finally certified as a winner on Griffin for 734 votes of more than 5.5 million ballots. Griffin granted earlier this month, but said he did not completely agree with the court’s analysis.
This month, the composition of the State Elections Board changed to reflect a 2024 law passed by the GOP -dominated General Assembly, which transferred the council’s appointment powers from the now democratic governor of the Auditor of the Republican State Dave Boliek. A Democratic majority 3-2 above is now a Republican majority of 3-2.
The new Council Iteration sounds open to embrace the wishes of the Department of Justice.
